Guilliuame Massard defines Industrial Ecology in his lectures as an
inter displinary study with the areas of –
1) Ecology = the scientific study of eco systems
2) Industrial = the activities of human with modern technology
What can be the best way to use resources without making a large amount of waste? Industrial Ecology looks at a range of systems in order to make and analysis for a sustainable model from nature to industrial systems. Some problematics we are facing are the general expansion of the system and the industrial society - “globalization”, the weakening o the state, and dependency on technological innovations. Industrial ecology wishes to create new models that can integrate these aspects.
An example of this industrial activity is processed orange juice– 100 kg of oil for a ton of orange juice, 22 glasses of water for a one glass of orange juice, in all 25 kg of matter for 1 liter of orange juice. As consumers we must think about the production that is behind such industries, we can conclude it is far less industrial waste to make your own juice rather then supporting processed juice organizations creating mass amounts of indutrial waste.
What we can do for the future would be to avoid, reduce, reuse, recycle, recover components, downcycle, energy recovery and disposal; this would be more or less what would be environmentally be desireable.
